From the boat to your room

If you are bringing luggage, and staying in a rental home or cottage, and do not want to carry it up the massively steep hillsides on the island, here is how to get it dropped off at your door.

When you get off the boat and set foot on the Monhegan dock, you will see a strong blonde woman named Susan McDonough on the back of a big silver/beige truck. Look for a sign on the truck that says "Monhegan Trucking." Bags are $3 a piece plus tip. Make sure to tell her where you are staying...

Wedding party: Little Frost or Mrazek House

If you are staying at the Inn, Shining Sails, Monhegan House or Trailing Yew, there are seperate trucks for you. Make sure to call ahead to let them know what boat you will be taking.

Seersucker

According to the United States Senate, a New Orleans clothier designed "a lightweight suit in pale blue and white striped rumpled cotton fabric" early in the 20th Century "to make summer wear more comfortable." The fabric, called seersucker, became so popular that the Senate set aside "Seersucker Thursdays" for its members to wear the cool suits.The New Orleans clothier credited with popularizing seersucker was Joseph Haspel. He started his company in 1909 and Haspel clothiers was still operating a century later, offering "100% pure combed cotton - for the ultimate in summer cool."The seersucker suit was introduced to Washington by Southern Congressman who valued the fabric for its light weight, its plisse finish and its wash and wear, drip and dry maintenance. The Senate tradition was started because of the intense summer heat in Washington, but it continued even after the Senate was air conditioned.

Attire, Weather permitting

We have received a lot of questions on the weather on Monhegan in September and the attire for the wedding.

Here is what we suggest...

Ceremony (will be outdoors unless inclement weather)


Men:
- comfortable shoes with treads, no flip flops or sneakers (Fred's decision)
- jacket is preferred, though tie is not necessary (we compromised)
- khakis or slacks


Women:
- dress, though can be a sundress
- comfortable flats with a tread
- cardigan or light jacket incase the temp is below 70


Evening Reception
- comfortable clothes and a warm jacket.
- Monhegan can dip down into the 40's at night in September, so socks are also recommended.

Monhegan Boat

Please be advised that we have chartered a 9am return boat to Port Clyde on September 13th, for those of you who wish to leave the island early or need to make a flight.

Tickets for this charter are dependant on the number of

people from the wedding who would like to take the boat, but will be around $40 per person, one way back to the mainland.

The Weather

It is important to remember that the weather can change very quickly on Monhegan. It is often very different from the "mainland" weather. It can be cold and foggy in the morning and break into a gorgeous sunny day mid afternoon. Or vise versa.

One of the characteristics of Maine in the late summer that makes it so wonderful to be there, is the cool evenings where you crawl under your feather comforter and hunker down with some red wine as the chill sets in.

This is why we suggest you bring comfortable Maine weather gear on your trip. A warm wool sweater, waterproof/resistant hiking shoes, socks, a scarf and a warm hat.

But also realize it can be quite beautiful during the day and often we lay out in the sun in our bathing suits, or even swim! So, also think about bringing shorts, flip flops and t-shirts.

Do's and don'ts

Do:

- bring rain gear

- pack bug spray

- wear comfy shoes

- bring a baseball cap or visor

- leave the golf clubs at home

- pack a fleece

- think about flannel pajamas

- remember you will be walking everywhere, there is no on island transportation

Don't:

- even think about bringing heels

(unless you like the idea of breaking your ankle

and being helicoptered to the mainland)

- be afraid the get a little wet (never underestimate fog)

- expect big city service, it is a working lobster fishing town!
